Answer received: 13.08.2007 03:40
Name of the character: Lazy Simba
Text of the answer:
your money at the beginning = x, ----> is crossing the bridge hahaha, <--- is crossing 2nd time, and the second ----> is crossing it the 3rd time.
-------->
x * 2 - 24

<-------
[(x * 2 - 24) * 2 - 24]

-------->
[(x * 2 -24) * 2 - 24] * 2 = 24

(x * 2 - 24) * 2 - 24 = 12

(x * 2 - 24) * 2 = 36

2x - 24 = 18

2x = 42

x = 21
_________________________

21 * 2 - 24 = 42
42 - 24 = 18
18 * 2 = 36
36 - 24 = 12
12 * 2 = 24 which you will to the Devil

hope i made myself clear enough, :)

Name of the character: Past Light
Text of the answer:
0=24-24|12+24=36|18+24=42|21

(|stands for the bridge which doubles the money)

It's 21 credits,

Well, at the end she had 0cr and those 24cr of devil
Before giving her last money to the devil she doubled the money on the bridge
24:2=12
Before 3rd bridge walk she gave devil 24 cr= 12+24=36
So she had 36 after the 2nd walk, that mean that before 2nd bridge she had 18 cr
36:2=18
So she had 18 cr after the first walk and she gave 24 to the Devil
18+24=42
And before the 1st walk she had 21 cr
42:2=21

Damn, you are poor if you have only 21 cr

My comments: :ok:

Name of the character: Bandit m
Text of the answer:
you started with 21 cr
then you went through once had 42 - 24 =18
then you went through second 36 - 24 =12
then you went through third 24 - 24 =0

Name of the character: Absyene
Text of the answer:
My answer of the task
Milady had 21 CR at the begining...
WHen she walked once she earned+21=42
42-24=18
18*2=36-24=12
12*2=24-24=0 devil stole all the money she had =)
The way i fugred it out was pretty simple
If we think with logic the only number that pass is 21 because it makes sense then
21*2=42-24=18*2=36-24=12*2=24-24=0
12*2-24
12+24=36 1/236=18
18+24=42
42/2=21
Thats the most simple way =)
Make it all from backwards =)

Additional information
Form backwards it comes
0+24/2+24/2=24/2=21
And thats the all action you have to do =)
Had been received at 14.08.2007 23:23…So, it is the time of the answer

All of you, guys, are smart and fast..I hadn`t said it before, but this time money will get every person that had answered right, because this contest was quite simple and had been created to “warm” you up before the next one…which will be quite complicated and will be resourceful enough. =))) Do not worry I won`t ask what was first: the egg or the hen. Oh, and put attention to the next thing – simple contest have low prize and more complicated ones give the bigger prize. So, next time there will be only one winner, who will have pretty nice jackpot :lick: Just follow the forum

Here is the contest I had promised before!

If you think that:
-smart enough and if you feel that you are on friendly terms with mathematics
-you want to earn some money
-you just want to have some fun
-you want to check your mathematical potential
then you are welcome to participate.

The only thing you need to do is to read the task very intently, to find the answer and to send it to the next e-mail: MiladyWinter@hot.ee In your e-mails, please, give the name of your character too - it is very important! You need to write right answer and to show the way, you had figured it out -> I want to see your explanations. Letters with attached files won`t be taken into account.
Please, do not post your answers to the forum - after the deadline (August, the 23rd, 22:00 server time) all answers will be posted by paladin to the forum and all people will get to know the right answer and the name of the winner.

Here is the task:

Let`s imagine that Earth is swiped at its equator by the hoop and that one orange is swiped at its bigger circle by the hoop too. And now let+s imagine that circumference of every hoop had increased by 1 metre. In this case, hoopes won`t swipe the bodies so tightly and there will appear some gap.

Here is the question:
In what case this gap will be bigger? In the case of the Earth or in the case of an orange?

Good luck, brave heart!

Sincerelly Yours,
Milady Winter :snegur:

P.S. I am reminding you once again that I need to have the explanations HOW did you got the munbers! All questions about contest should be posted here... If you will send me more than 1 letter, I will take into account the time of 2nd letter..

  (23.08.07 15:59)

You have successfully trasferred 1.00 CR. To "Theseus"
for the previous contest

  (23.08.07 22:08)

Answer received: 20.08.2007 22:03
Name of the character: Blondiine
Text of the answer:
Ok here it goes !
The biger gap will be  Earth case  because :
On equator  the Earth  circumference is about 40000000 meters ( forword m) and orange about 0,15 till 0,40 m then
40000000 / 2 / 3.14 = 6369426,75 m << radiuss of equator circumference
40000001 / 2 / 3.14 = 6369226,91 m << radiuss of   hoop (on equator) when it was incrased by 1 meter
so gap is 0,16 m

1) but  orange (0,15 meters)
0,15 / 2 / 3.14 = 0,02388   << radius of orange circumference
1,15 / 2 / 3.14 = 0,18312   << radius  of hoop  when it incrased by 1 meter
so gap is 0,15924 m and it is smaler then gap on equator

2)  but orange (0,40 meters)
0,40 / 2 / 3.14 = 0,06369 <<< radius of orange circumference
1,40 / 2 / 3.14 = 0,22292 <<< raduss of hoop when it incrased by 1 meter
so gap is 0,15923 m and it is smaler  then earth radiuss

Think thats all   !

My comments: answer is not right, although it is explained. You have mistake in your explanation

  (23.08.07 22:11)

Answer received: 21.08.2007 00:16
Name of the character: Last Samurai
Text of the answer:
the explanation in same in both cases! the distance is the same  i mean the radius of the circle that was inlarged with 1 meter is 1/2PI ;arger the the initial radius of the circle!
Explanation:
length of first circle is 2R*PI... andf ter inlarging it with 1 meter it becomes 2R*Pi +1 wich becomes the length of the new circle wich cand be writen as 2R'*PI
if we resolve this ecuation
2R*PI+1=2R'*Pi we get that R'= R+1/2PI so the diference between the initial radius and the final radius is same for all kind of cirles found in this situation and that is 1/2PI becasue PI is constant =3.1416.....

My comments: answer is absolutely right and well explained :ok:

  (23.08.07 22:13)

10.00 CR. transferred successfully to Last Samurai

  (23.08.07 22:24)

R of the Earth is C/2PI
r of the orange is c/2PI
after increasing of circumference of every hoop by 1 metre we`ll have:
C+1 in Earth case and c+1 at the orange case; their R - Earth: (C+1)/2PI and the orange: (c+1)/2PI
and as you can see we`ll have:
for the Earth (C+1)/2PI - C/2PI = 1/2PI
for the orange (c+1)/2PI - c/2PI = 1/2PI
So, we can see that the gap in both cases is the same - 1/2PI metres ~16 cm.

And as Last Samurai had said "the diference between the initial radius and the final radius is same for all kind of cirles found in this situation and that is 1/2PI becasue PI is constant =3.1416...."

  (24.08.07 02:08)

I still did not understood the problem.. but i understood a part of the solution :D

Here is the task:

How can you have 31 in sum using five "3"s only?

Tips:
You CAN use:
1. ( )
2. +/-
3. / & *
4. to raise numbers to different powers, if it is needed
5. extract the root/s, if it is needed
6. Of course, "=" is allowed too :D
You CAN NOT to use:
1. differential/s
2. integral/s
and all other operations that belong to the higher mathematics

Good luck, brave heart!

Sincerelly Yours,
Milady Winter :snegur:

P.S. I am reminding you once again that I need to have the explanations HOW did you got the numbers! All questions about contest should be posted here... If you will send me more than 1 letter, I will take into account the time of 2nd letter..

  (29.08.07 22:12)

I will take into account ALL your letters!!!

  (30.08.07 18:21)

Should i understand that if i can use [ 4. to raise numbers to different powers, if it is needed] then i can multiply as many 3 i need?
